David and Goliath Chapter Two

                                                       David and Goliath Chapter Two

Chapter two of Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath Focus’s on our worlds view that having more is always better. Gladwell points out the significant of working hard for what you have to build character and work ethic. Gladwell interviewed one of Hollywood’s most powerful people. He grew up working for everything that he had by shoveling and raking for neighbors and working for his father’s scrap metal business. He grew up wishing for more than he had and setting a goal to achieve that. Now that he is a millionaire he finds it very hard to teach his children the same hard work ethic he developed when he was young. You would think that growing up with plenty of money is all sunshine and rainbows, sadly this is not the case for the parents who want to teach their children the value of money. In this way we can see Gladwell’s point when he says more isn’t always better.

I have always struggled with wanting more than I have wither that be money or things it is hard to be content with what you have. Coming from the viewpoint of someone who didn’t have a ton of money growing up it is easy to sit around thinking and dreaming of the things that would want or the places you the to go, the hard part is going out there and getting it. When you start out with not that much it Is easier to motivate yourself to work harder and to do better, but if you start out with everything you want and more then finding that motivation could be very difficult. I can see how the Hollywood star would have a hard time with his kids. On one hand he wants to give them everything but on the other he wants to teach them to work for what they want. In conclusion I believe that Gladwell is very right in saying that more isn’t always better.
