What David and Goliath Tought Me
David and Goliath is a Story we have all
heard a least once in our lives. It’s a story that inspires people to battle their
giants in life with a strong hope of coming up on top. Malcolm Gladwell book David and Goliath tells this iconic
story and puts it into a new perspective. He compares this story with many
other stories of people who battle giants in their own lives. Throughout this
quarter we have read three chapters of this book and I have written about them
all.
The first chapter we read which was
chapter two focused on the idea that more isn’t always better. This concept for
me was very interesting to think about. We as humans are always trying to get
more, be more, have more then someone else. But does having more really satisfy
you? Gladwell focuses on the life of a man who grew up working for everything
he had and is now a billionaire. This man talked about how hard he worked to be
where he is now and, his problem with teaching his kids the same lessons.
The next chapter we read was chapter eight.
This chapter told four different stories that showed different kinds of power.
We spent a lot of time on this chapter talking about different perspectives and
beliefs about power. The story that out to me the most in this chapter was the
story of Rosemary Lawlor and the conflict between the Catholics and Protestants.
The British tried to use their power to help but ended up making the situation
much worse. It is hard to be a leader and to make the right decision, a lot of
the time they are wrong and you as the leader must deal with that.
The Last chapter we read was chapter eight
which tied the last to we read and the introduction all together. Gladwell
showed a different perspective on the idea of more isn’t always better. He
tells the two sad stories of two tragic murders. Each family reacted differently
one was in forgiveness and one in a vow for this tragedy to never happen again.
These two stories show a very interesting contrast of the idea of more isn’t always
better and ties beautifully together with the rest of the chapters.
Writing and thinking about these chapters have
taught me a lot about myself and my writing. I have learned to power of my
words and how they can make a difference. This class has given me a knew few of
English and writing. This class has shown me that a paper is just a paper on its
own but wants you write on it, it becomes so much more important.
We all have something to say even if we don’t
say it, and when you are confident in your words and beliefs you can make a
huge difference in someone’s life. Making this blog for everyone to see my work
made me a little nervous. I don’t normal like to show people the things I’ve
worked hard on because I don’t want them to be negative about it. But I found
that it gave me more confidence when I knew people were reading it.
I will never forget the things I learned
in this class and the confidence it gave me to write my own opinion and not
worry about what the people reading would say. English has never been my
strongest subject but I’ve always enjoyed it. This class made me enjoy it even
more be excited for my English classes in the future.
Natalie, I got a bit emotional reading this. I'm so pleased to know this initially uncomfortable practice evolved into something empowering for you (no pun intended). Thank you for allowing me to share your blog with others. Not only has it been a positive experience for you, but it has the potential to inspire others as well. Keep posting and updating; I'm a subscriber and can't wait to see what you'll do next!
