The Power Of Words

Image
What is power to you?   Maybe it’s strength, maybe influence, maybe fear. To me power is words. Words can hurt or heal, they can make a situation better or worse, words are the most powerful thing a person possesses. We have the choice of using our words positively or negatively, to use them against someone or to build them up. In Chapter one of Malcolm Gladwell’s book David and Goliath, Gladwell tells the story of a man who does an amazing job of using positive words to build                  Vivek Ranadive of Mumbai had a young daughter named Anjali. She and the girls in her neighborhood had decided to start and basketball team, and Vivek was going to coach it. The interesting thing about this was that he knew very little about basketball. Anjali said, “It was really random. I mean, my father had never played basketball before” (Gladwell 19). Vivek was determined to do his best to help the girls succeed but also have fun while playing the sport. He had tw

What David and Goliath Tought Me

David and Goliath is a Story we have all heard a least once in our lives. It’s a story that inspires people to battle their giants in life with a strong hope of coming up on top. Malcolm Gladwell book David and Goliath tells this iconic story and puts it into a new perspective. He compares this story with many other stories of people who battle giants in their own lives. Throughout this quarter we have read three chapters of this book and I have written about them all.         The first chapter we read which was chapter two focused on the idea that more isn’t always better. This concept for me was very interesting to think about. We as humans are always trying to get more, be more, have more then someone else. But does having more really satisfy you? Gladwell focuses on the life of a man who grew up working for everything he had and is now a billionaire. This man talked about how hard he worked to be where he is now and, his problem with teaching

Stanly

This is my plant Stanly, I have had him for about a month. My dad gave him to me for Valentines day. The only problem is, he came in one of those disposable pots that have big holes in then. This meant this plant was technically meant to be planted in the ground. Well this isn't really a good time of year to plant a plant outside, so i decided to just put it in a cute pot. I went to target to find one thinking that would be a good place to look. I ran into a problem though, they didn't have that many small pots and the ones they had were very expensive for a flower pot.    As i walked around the store I kept seeing those little fake plants all around. I got the idea to just buy one of those and use it's pot, which is what I did. This made my purchase much cheaper then if I had bought a different one. It came down to about $7. So long story short don't be afraid to take your time and think outside of the box to save some money.

More Isn't Always Better Part 2

More isn’t Always Better Part Two           Chapter eight of David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell was different from the chapters. The main idea was too make us see again in another way that more isn’t always better by making going back to what was said in chapter two. There were two main stories. The first was about a young girl named Kimber, she came back from college to visit her family. Kimber was out to lunch with some friends, they were walking back to there car when two men came running up and tried to rob her. She resisted, and the man ended up shooting her. She was rushed to the hospital and died a few hours later. Her father Mike Reynolds swore on that day “I can’t save your life. But I’m going to do everything in my power to try to prevent this from happening to anybody else.” (Gladwell 234)        This is exactly what Mike Reynolds set out to do. He set up a meeting with people all around the neighborhood to come up with a plan

Is Power As Great As It Seems?

Is Power as Great as It Seems?             Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath chapter seven focuses on several story’s that all have similar themes. They all have someone in power who makes a choice whether it was what they thought was right or not ended up with some hard consequences. For example, in the story of Rosemary Lawlor, because of the conflict between the Protestants and Catholics the British wanted to help by trying to control the situation and only making things worse. The British end up turning on them in the end as Rosemary’s father had predicted. The main point that Gladwell wanted us to see was that whoever is in charge is who the people will follow they set they set the example. And when something goes wrong it is all on them, but I don’t know if I fully agree with this            I believe that we all make a choice to do the right thing or the wrong sure there might be s

David and Goliath Chapter Two

David and Goliath Chapter Two           Chapter two of Malcolm Gladwell’s David and Goliath Focus’s on our worlds view that having more is always better. Gladwell points out the significant of working hard for what you have to build character and work ethic. Gladwell interviewed one of Hollywood’s most powerful people. He grew up working for everything that he had by shoveling and raking for neighbors and working for his father’s scrap metal business. He grew up wishing for more than he had and setting a goal to achieve that. Now that he is a millionaire he finds it very hard to teach his children the same hard work ethic he developed when he was young. You would think that growing up with plenty of money is all sunshine and rainbows, sadly this is not the case for the parents who want to teach their children the value of money. In this way we can see Gladwell’s point when he says more isn’t always better.

What you didnt know about Goliath

The book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell focus’ on the story of you guessed it David and Goliath. In the introduction Gladwell begins by explaining the well-known story of the battle between David and Goliath. After explaining this story, he then begins to focus on Goliath. At first glance Goliath looks big and intimidating, but if you look at his behavior in the story this isn’t totally true. Medical experts now believe that Goliath had a rare condition called acromegaly which would have caused his enormous size and his lack of sight. Because of this he would have had no idea what David was doing until it was too late. Gladwell started his book out this way because he wanted us to see that our giants aren’t as scary as they seem. He wanted to make sure we get the story right.        If I am totally honest I was not very interested in this book at first, I have been raised Christian my whole life, so I know the story very well. But this intro
